Attractions
Macarthur is centrally located to many attractions in South West Victoria. Only 9km West of Macarthur is the Mount Eccles National Park. Just local attractions are mentioned here but there are many more attractions within an easy two hour drive of Macarthur. For example, The Twelve Apostles on the Great Ocean Road, the Blue Lake at Mount Gambier and Halls Gap in the Grampians. In short, Macarthur is ideally located as the location from which to visit the attractions of South West Victoria and South East South Australia.

Mount Eccles National Park
The Mount Eccles National Park is just 9km West of Macarthur. Explorer Major Mitchell named the mount Mt Eeles in 1836 but the name later adopted was Mount Eccles. The Mount Eccles National Park is famous for its large population of Koalas (presently around 5,000) and its fissure volcano, which is believed to be around 30,000 years old. Mount Eccles has a scoria cone, a rare lava tunnel feature and a scenic crater lake named Lake Surprise. Mount Eccles National Park also has a camping ground and interpretive centre.

What are tumuli or lava blisters?
Lava Blisters, or Tumuli, are another rare feature found in South West Victoria's Volcanic landscape. The Tumuli are steep-sided, dome shaped stone rises - some reaching 10 metres in height. Gases in the lava flowing from the Mt Napier volcano along Harmans Valley accumulated to produce these bubble structures above the lava flow. The bubble skin solidified and formed a crust. The Tumuli are thought to be around 8,000 years old.
(Please note: the blisters are on private property so please do not enter the property.)

Harmans Valley Lava Flow
Harmans Valley lava flow cuts across the C184 and is able to be viewed from a scenic lookout with Mount Napier as a backdrop. The lookout has interpretive display boards. Nearby, and running alongside, the C184 are examples of dry-stone walls that were built from the stone found in the Harmans Valley lava flow.

Byaduk Caves
The Byaduk Caves are located four kilometres from North Byaduk. They were formed when the lava crust on top of the lava flow solidified but the lava beneath the crust remained molten and continued flowing along Harmans Valley. The solidified crust collapsed in some places, such as at the Byaduk Caves, to reveal large underground caverns.
